The Leopard [1963] [DVD]

The Leopard [1963] [DVD] review

Editorial Reviews

Synopsis
Italian director Luchino Visconti delivers one of his most ambitious works with this sprawling historical drama. Based on the acclaimed novel by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, THE LEOPARD is set in Sicily during the 1800s, as the aristocracy found itself being suffocated by a newly democratic fervor. Prince Don Fabrizio Salina (Burt Lancaster) tries to hold on to the past, but it appears that his glory days are waning. This is perfectly exemplified by his nephew Tancredi Falconeri (Alain Delon) and his gorgeous wife-to-be Angelica (Claudia Cardinale). As the revolt gathers steam and begins to affect a real change, the aging prince must come to terms with the new world that surrounds him. With THE LEOPARD, Visconti confirms his status as one of Europe's most masterful directors, particularly with the 45 minute ballroom scene.

2001 - A Space Odyssey [Blu-ray] [1968]

Keir Dullea, Gary Lockwood, William Sylvester, Leonard RossiterDirector: Stanley Kubrick

Customer Reviews

"I must say, you guys have certainly come up with something..."5
It was with a certain trepidation that I put this, my first blu-ray disk, into my new Panasonic blu-ray player. "2001: a space odyssey" has been my favourite film for as long as I can remember, and I've owned copies on a variety of VHS tapes and DVDs.

The theme is just about as epic as it's possible to imagine: the evolution of man from ape through human to a completely new life form. It's a film which has sharply polarised views, with some people completely mystified or even bored by the presentation, whilst others are spellbound and deeply moved. Unsurprisingly, I am in the second category, and still find myself surprised that Kubrick managed to get a major motion picture company to finance such a bold and imaginative film.

The presentation on blu-ray is beyond my wildest dreams. I take the point of a previous viewer about the visible joins in the front-projection screens, which could no doubt have been digitally removed, but other than that the film is in appropriately pristine condition. I sat down to watch for a few minutes - just to check that the new blu-ray player was working - and found myself watching the whole way through to the end.

The special effects were always a highlight of the film, and they do not disappoint in this new transfer. My particular favourite comes at the end of the first section of The Blue Danube where the camera appears to sail straight through between the 'wheels' of the space station - absolutely marvellous!

This film easily holds its place amongst other great cinema masterworks; watch this blu-ray version and find out exactly why.

Superb film, good transfer, poor extras ...5
As has been reported this disc does have an FBI warning at the beginning but is otherwise a UK release. The packaging is for the UK. I love this film, have done for 35 years so I won't comment on the movie itself except to say that 95% of the visuals could have been made yesterday and that the story is fiercely intelligent. And so to the Blu-Ray disc:
The transfer is good. There are very few anomalies (and I don't mean Tycho Magnetic Anomalies), most of the anomalies that are present were built in, eg dirt on the rear projection screen in the Dawn of Man sequence. That brings me to my only real irritation with the film. If Stanley Kubrick was such a perfectionist (and he was) then why oh why did he allow the set designers to use a godawful backcloth screen to simulate the African terrain and sky? It's SO blaringly obvious that it's artificial because the viewer can see creases and imperfection in the fabric. It ruins the whole sequence. It was bad enough on DVD but with the extra resolution of Blu-ray it's just annoying. It's the one things that I wish someone would digitally correct.
After that all is well. Yes they got the Earth from space wrong (too washed out) but the SFX are stunningly good and look marvellous in HD. It amused me to read IBM-Tele-Pad on the Discovery crew's flat screen TV pads (whilst they're eating). There's a multitude of fine detail revealed: the ancillary rooms inside the lunar shuttle docking area reveal figures and screens that I'd not noticed before. The Star-Gate sequence looks a LOT better now. The finer detail and improved colour range of HD really adds some wow factor to it. I'm still not convinced by the colour filtered landscapes though: they could have tried harder there.
The audio is good. The soundtrack is good as it can be for a 40 year old film and despite being a little 'thin' is well within modern standards.
Frame judder is a slight problem as reported by another reviewer but I'm wondering whether that was a limitation of the original effects rather than the transfer to Blu-Ray because the same scenes in SD in the extras reveal the same judder.
The extras are many but none good. There's a very iffy Channel-4 documentary with some annoying talking heads discussing the film and various other small documentaries. None make the heart race. The best is a promotional film made for 'Look' Magazine in 1966 that was designed to interest potential advertisers in buying into a 'special' Space related supplement due to be published first quarter 68 on the back of the 2001 release. It shows some really interesting scenes of production, Kubrick on set etc and Clarke in the Grumman factory inspecting Lunar Modules.
There's something weird about this release. Amazon had a release date that has been a gone with no stock. The other Kubrick related releases appeared on time but not this one leading me to think there's been a production problem. It is possible to obtain a copy elsewhere and if you like 2001 it's worth doing so.

Tokyo Story (Blu-ray + DVD)

Tokyo Story (Blu-ray + DVD) [1953] review

Product Description

Yasujiro Ozu s most enduring masterpiece, Tokyo Story, is a beautifully nuanced exploration of filial duty, expectation and regret. From the simple tale of the elderly Hirayma couple s visit to Tokyo to see their grown-up children, Ozu draws a compelling contrast between the measured dignity of age and the hurried insensitivity of a younger generation. A constant fixture of critics polls, Tokyo Story is now available for the first time on Blu-ray from the BFI.

Also contains full length feature Brothers and Sisters of the Toda Family, a sharp critique of bourgeois frivolity, as an extra.

Extra Features:

  • Dual Format Edition: includes both Blu-ray and the DVD versions of the main feature
  • Also contains full length Ozu feature, Brothers and Sisters of the Toda Family (DVD only)
  • Original Theatrical Trailer
  • Extensive illustrated booklet featuring essays and film notes
  • Dolby Digital mono audio (320 kbps)

Top DVDs For Father's Day

In many instances, buying gifts can get quite difficult year after year and more often than not, Dad will only appreciate so many pairs of socks, undies and the odd set of tees and golf balls, so here we uncover the top DVDs to give Dad for Father's Day!

Hurt Locker

Set in worn-torn Iraq, Bravo company members are responsible for disarming bombs and ensuring that no one gets hurt in the process. With three very different personalities and a raft of internal struggles, these men somehow have to work together in one of the most dangerously deadly jobs in the world.

Avatar

While many women delight in this movie for its great love story, Dad will undoubtedly enjoy it because of the awesome action scenes in pure 3D landscapes.

While the military can see only financial gain from destroying the breathtakingly beautiful land of Pandora, Jake, an Avatar in the Military program has seen that the grass is indeed greener on the other side and begins to appreciate the simpler things in life while in his avatar body, which doesn't sit will with management, to which a full-scale war breaks out and it's on for young and old (the best part of the flick for dads, remember?).

Sherlock Holmes

Directed by Guy Ritchie, this classic tale of good guy versus bad guy has been recreated with a modern twist by stars such as Robert Downey Jr, Jude Law and Rachel McAdams. After catching serial killer Lord Blackwood, Holmes and Watson are happy to have solved one of their most difficult cases. However, Lord Blackwood manages to come back from the dead and picks up where he left off on his killing spree and in turn, Holmes is put back on the case of stopping this murderous villain once and for all. The only problem is that Holmes is somewhat of a lady's man and when untrustworthy Irene Adler comes on the scene, Sherlock is distracted from the task at hand!

As an alternative to those abovementioned movies (should Dad have already seen them), there are some other fantastic titles that are available and perfect for Father's Day:

* Underbelly

* The Golden Mile

* Entourage (season six)

* CSI (season nine)

* Top Gear

* Mad Men (season three)

* Invictus

* Man vs. Wild

By giving him one of these fantastic DVDs, not only will you be popular with dad on Father's Day, but you'll also have a great excuse to sit down, relax and enjoy a great film with one of the favourite men in your life!

The 10 Best Billy Connolly DVDs

Billy Connolly is the comedian of his generation. The greatest comedian ever to come out of the UK. Here is a list of 10 of his best DVDs.

1. Billy and Albert.

Filmed at the Royal Albert Hall in 1987 Connolly shows exactly why he was regarded as one the top 3 comedians in the world alongside Richard Pryor and Robin Williams.

Contains some of his classic routines such as Tarantulas and their wily ways and Scuba Diving.

Hilarious from start to finish with some of Connolly's notorious ADHD thrown in for good measure.

2. Billy Connolly Live 1991

Connolly at his very best. Some brilliant routines about pit-bull terriers, dog sex and chatting up women. Also has one the funniest sets you will ever see about football.

This tour became infamous after Margaret Thatcher's daughter Carol stormed out of one of his show after taking exception to jokes Connolly made about her mother's resignation as Prime Minister.

3. Billy Connolly Live 1994

Another night at the Hammersmith Apollo and another classic Connolly DVD. Some classic stories about growing up in Glasgow, his early work in the shipyards, and singing at parties.

This video was also highly controversial. Shortly after it's original release it was removed from distribution after jokes Connolly made about mass-murderer Fred West. With West's trial still ongoing at the time several minutes were removed after he complained that it may prejudice his case.

Connolly famously remarked "I think the bodies in your garden will do that Fred."

4. Billy Connolly Bites Yer Bum

Filmed at the Victoria Apollo in 1981 this was Billy Connolly's first live video. A culmination of a year-long tour of Britain.

Contains a lot of Connolly's cruder early material and some classic song parodies.

5. Hand Picked by Billy Connolly

Billy Connolly's second ever live video. Contains his brilliant routine about 'The Lovely Raquel - the inflatable lady.'

This is early Connolly when his act was more based on jokes than his later observational-style.

6. Billy Connolly Live in Dublin 2002

Even approaching his 60th birthday Billy Connolly yet again proves his is one of the best in the business. This show was the pinnacle of his World Tour of England, Wales and Ireland. This video also spawned his youtube hit about the tobacco police and mobile phones.

Contains bonus footage from his sell-out nights in Belfast, Killarney, Newcastle, Plymouth, Cardiff and London.

7. World Tour of Scotland

The first of Connolly's World Tour series for the BBC and in my opinion the best. In a 6-part series Connolly travels the length and breadth of his native country re-visiting a lot of his old haunts. Inter-mixed with footage from over 60 live shows during his tour.

Connolly visits many locations that are close to his heart throughout his native country.

8. World Tour of Australia

Billy Connolly's second BBC tour series. A country that Connolly hated in his early days it is now a place he truly loves. He experiences several Australian customs and attractions including swimming with dolphins, pie floaters and museums and galleries featuring Aboriginal art.

9. World Tour of England, Wales and Ireland

The third in the World Tour series for the BBC. Connolly travels throughout the UK to show some of the places close to his heart. This includes things such as: the sectarian divide in Northern Ireland; His grandfather's grave in Southern Ireland; and the Geordie miners.

10. Billy Connolly Journey to the edge of the world

Connolly's latest travelogue takes him to some of the wildest and remotest places of the world. He explores the vast Arctic region, from Canada's Nova Scotia to the Northwest Passage of the Pacific Ocean. Following in the footsteps' of the world's most audacious explorers he searches for bears, whales and icebergs. He also encounters many people who have found home in this frozen wilderness.

All of these DVDs and more are available on the Billy Connolly Ultimate DVD Box Set

Audie Murphy stars as himself in the true-life account of his incredible courage and heroism that made him the most decorated soldier of World War Two. Joining the Army at just 18, he was modest and self-effacing but also a natural leader and he quickly rose through the ranks as the US military fought in Africa and then advances through Italy, France and into Germany. In his greatest act of valour, for which he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, he ordered his men to withdraw to safety as six German tanks and waves of infantry attacked. Having directed artillery fire by telephone he then climbed on to one of his own burning tanks to employ its machinegun, refusing to give an inch of ground and saving his company.

Amazon.co.uk Review
"It's alive! Alive!" shouts Colin Clive's triumphant Dr. Frankenstein as electricity buzzes over the hulking body of a revived corpse. "In the name of God now I know what it's like to be God!" For years unheard, this line has been restored, along with the legendary scene of the childlike monster tossing a little girl into a lake, in James Whale's Frankenstein, one of the most famous and influential horror movies ever made. Coming off the tremendous success of Dracula, Universal assigned sophomore director Whale to helm an adaptation of Mary Shelley's famous novel with Bela Lugosi as the monster. When Lugosi declined the role, Whale cast the largely unknown character actor Boris Karloff and together with makeup designer Jack Pierce they created the most memorable monster in movie history: a towering, lumbering creature with sunken eyes, a flat head, and a jagged scar running down his forehead. Whale and Karloff made this mute, misunderstood brute, who has the brain of a madman (the most obvious of the many liberties taken with Shelley's story), the most pitiable freak of nature to stumble across the screen. Clive's Dr. Frankenstein is intense and twitchy and Dwight Frye set the standard for mad-scientist sidekicks as the wild-eyed hunchback assistant. Whale's later films, notably the spooky spoof The Old Dark House and the deliriously stylised sequel The Bride of Frankenstein, display a surer cinematic hand than seen here and add a subversive twist of black comedy, but given the restraints of early sound films, Whale breaks the film free from static stillness and adorns it with striking design and expressionist flourishes. --Sean Axmaker

Synopsis
Frankenstein is James Whale's first stylish, expressionist film (Invisible Man, Bride of Frankenstein) to grace the Universal horror cycle of the 1930s and 1940s (Dracula, The Mummy). Scientist Henry Frankenstein (Colin Clive) and his hunchbacked assistant, Fritz (Dwight Frye), embark on an unholy mission by stealing a body from a graveyard and a human brain from a medical college. Unbeknownst to Frankenstein, however, Fritz takes a violent and murderous abnormal brain. Henry's strange letters about his experiments worry his fiancee, Elizabeth (Mae Clark), and friends Victor (John Boles) and Dr. Waldman (Edward Van Sloan). They arrive at Frankenstein's laboratory to find the spectacular scene of creation under way and Frankenstein intoxicated with his own godlike power. Frankenstein is in many ways the original horror classic, virtually creating the genre itself, leading to numerous sequels and myriad imitators. Whale's ability to give humanity to the Monster is one of the film's most stunning successes.

It took more than one man to name her "Shanghai Lily"5
Shanghai Express is a gorgeous film. If you like films of the 1930s, this one is a must-have. The actors and the locales are beautiful and exotic. The lead actors have real chemistry and the cast of supporting characters, played by the greatest character star actors of the '30s, is wonderful. All are interesting, engaging and fun to watch. The beautiful lighting is of major importance in creating the ambiance all through the film. The costumes, of their period, are lovely. The setting is wartime in China and the director, Joseph von Sternberg, while concentrating on the romance, still manages to convey wartime atmosphere without putting much overt blood and violence on the screen. Aside from the reunion and rekindling of the romance between Dietrich and handsome Clive Brook, there are sensitively told stories of the role racism played in the lives of two of the characters played by Anna May Wong and Warner Oland. The only aspect of the film which might be problematic for 21st century viewers is the very stagy acting. But I love it. Shanghai Express is one of my all-time favorite films. In the US and Canada you must have an all-region DVD player to watch this. I bought one to watch this and other great films only available in non-North American formats.

Shanghai Express5
This DVD is one of the best films Marlene ever did.Her acting is first class, it's only a shame that the leading man is so wooden. However the film does not suffer too much from that , and overall it is what you expect from Dietrich. The transfer to DVD is very good consiering the year it was made, and the end result is very good value for money.

This is not a review5
The 2 reviews shown for this film are for the wrong Shanghai Express!

To the best of my knowledge Marlene Dietrich didn't star in too many martial arts films. I'm planning to watch the film (the right one) in the next week or three, and maybe I'll write a review when I get some time again.

sim-ply marvellous!5
Another tour-de-force from the wonderful Alistair Sim and an object lesson in comic timing and delivery of a terrific script from a master. I hesitate to call it his finest hour as he had so many! The plot is splendid and the supporting cast - a who's who of British 1940s cinema - is first rate. I do agree that the quality of the DVD could have been better though.

SPOILER IN A REVIEW BELOW5
Mr DeRiemer below offers a lengthy review which will ruin any chance of enjoying the ending by revealing the plot. I haven't seen the film so this is hardly a review but I might save others from this man's musings. I have asked Amazon to consider removing it.

Brilliant film, indifferent DVD3
They say you get what you pay for. This is a superior crime thriller notable for the intricacy of its plot, the acid wit of the script and above all the superb moonlit black and white cinematography.

Potential buyers of this cheap Network DVD version should note that the picture, though acceptable, is not as sharp as it might be and the sound is generally poor. There appears to have have been minimal, if any, effort at restoration. Happily, there is at the time of writing a Criterion version soon to be released. I for one will upgrade.

Night And The City [1950] [DVD]
Directed by Jules Dassin

Price: £4.99 & eligible for FREE Super Saver Delivery. Details

Editorial Reviews

Synopsis
In NIGHT AND THE CITY, director Jules Dassin brilliantly fuses two styles of filmmaking, crossing the expressionist lighting and framing of film noir with the almost documentary location shooting he used for THE NAKED CITY (1948). Dassin treats NIGHT AND THE CITY’s central London locations as strange exotic places. As the movie opens, it is night time and small-time hood Harry Fabian (Richard Widmark) is running from almost unseen pursuers. Harry crosses in front of St. Paul's Cathedral, and Dassin shows this familiar tourist sight from a very high angle, then immediately juxtaposes a shot of Harry escaping through bombed-out ruins. While Dassin and director of photography Max Greene shoot exteriors from high angles or from cramped doorways, they shoot interiors from low angles catching their actors against heavily contrasted backgrounds. The result is a movie full of diamond-sharp, angst-ridden visuals.

NIGHT AND THE CITY is built round the dynamic febrile performance of Richard Widmark as the constantly scheming, ever-overreaching Harry. Herbert Lom is brilliant as the Greek who ruthlessly controls wrestling in London. Francis L. Sullivan, huge and slow moving, exudes menace as nightclub owner Phil Nosseross. And Googie Withers is very striking as Nosseross's smart but desperate wife.

Christ's life is presented with respect for the traditional religious doctrine of the church, but Pasolini's trademark naturalism "humanizes" his subject and makes Him his own. The documentary-style camera captures Christ's meetings with the men who were to become his disciples, the Last Supper, and the betrayal by Judas. Note the rich music of Bach, Mozart, Prokofiev and Webern and Odetta's passionate singing. Academy Award Nominations: 3, including Best (Adapted) Score.

Amazon.co.uk Review
Made in 1957, Wild Strawberries finds the great Swedish director Ingmar Bergman at the height of his powers. It's a road movie, in effect: an aged medical professor (Victor Sjöström)--lonely, disillusioned and haunted by dreams of death--travels across country to receive an honorary degree. But as with all good road movies, the outer journey parallels an inner one. Incidents along the road conjure up memories, and Professor Borg finds himself forced to confront the failures and lost opportunities of his life. Gentle and elegiac, Bergman's film is a masterpiece of compassion and reconciliation, and also a tribute to his predecessor Sjöström, the greatest Swedish director of the silent era. The 78-year-old film maker gives an austere, moving performance, and Bergman treats his lined features like a landscape of yearning and regret. Sjöström is ably supported by other members of Bergman's regular repertory company of the period, particularly Bibi Andersson, heartbreakingly appealing, as the lost love of Borg's youth. --Philip Kemp

Amazon.co.uk Review
Wild Strawberries, Ingmar Bergman's 1957 follow-up to the The Seventh Seal, is a "journey" movie. Victor Sjostrom plays Isak Borg, an elderly retired professor of medicine, setting out by car to the University of Lund to receive a Jubilee doctorate degree. With him on the journey is his daughter-in-law Marianne (Ingrid Thulin). Along the way, they pick up a bickering couple and three hitchhikers, including effervescent sprite Sara (Bibi Andersson). Borg also experiences some troubling and beautifully realised dream sequences, as well as flashbacks evoked by a visit to the country house of his youth. Through these, we learn of Borg's awareness of his imminent demise and his underlying regret that his personal relationships have always been distant and reserved, especially with his wife and son.

With his magnificently aged and infinitely expressive emotional range borne of his years as a silent movie actor, Sjostrom superbly conveys a dawning sense of remorse and self-realisation. However, the performance is almost too good. The central accusation of the film--that the doctor is "utterly cold"--hardly squares with what we see of him on screen. We just have to take Bergman's word for the doctor's past aloofness. Wild Strawberries is so overpoweringly rich and ruminative a film, however, that what should be a major flaw is reduced to a barely visible crack.

On the DVD: the text-only extras are notes from Bergman's own memoir, in which he discusses his own estrangement from his parents (the autobiographical inspiration for Wild Strawberries) while critic Geoff Andrews' additional comments are helpful. He hails the film as "one of the first great road movies".--David Stubbs

Amazon.co.uk Review
This 1946 adaptation of Ernest Hemingway's short story adds well over an hour of new material to the original tale. The reason is, while director Robert Siodmak, star Burt Lancaster, and an outstanding supporting cast are faithful to Hemingway's work, his story only takes up about 15 minutes of screen time. Burt Lancaster plays the doomed man sought by hired guns in a small town. Hemingway's bruisingly concise dialogue makes an early sequence set in a diner quite unnerving, but after the killers dispense with their prey, Siodmak turns to an insurance investigator (Edmond O'Brien) who looks into the reasons behind the murder. An exemplary film noir (complete with a fickle femme fatale played by Ava Gardner), The Killers is all mood and fatalism.--Tom Keogh

A former fighter awaits the arrival of his executioners. When they arrive they shoot him dead without a fight. An insurance investigator must decide why it is that a man gave up his life so easily...

Synopsis
Based on Henry James's TURN OF THE SCREW, THE INNOCENTS is a chilling psychological horror film about a woman, Miss Giddens (Kerr), who takes a position as governess for two orphans in a stately Victorian home. Alone with the children and only a few servants, Miss Giddens soon begins to see what she believes to be ghosts and begins to suspect that the children's increasingly bizarre behaviour may be the result of some supernatural power. When she learns the fate of the house's previous governess and valet, Miss Giddens takes it upon herself to rescue the children from the supernatural being that seems to have them in its grips, all the while questioning her own sanity. Kerr's nuanced performance, possibly the best of her career, and Francis's atmospheric cinematography help make this a true horror classic.

Amazon.co.uk Review
A comic masterpiece from director-star Jacques Tati (Playtime, Traffic), this 1958 film--Tati's first in colour--reprises the carefree, oblivious title character from the director's hilarious international hit Mr. Hulot's Holiday. This time, the story finds Hulot, a self-involved twit on a constant collision with the physical world, grappling with 1950s-style progress. Visiting his sister and brother-in-law in their ultra-progressive household full of noisy gadgets and futuristic decor, Hulot inevitably has dust-ups with modernity, each one exceptionally funny. Taking a page from Buster Keaton's play book, Tati also employs his trademark techniques with sound and production design to achieve the indefinable, comic genius of his films: the rhythmic clacking of footsteps, the cartoon-panel distance of his camera frame from the heart of the action. (Why are funny things funnierwhen seen from a few extra feet away?) Tati is one of the cinema's great treasures, and Mon Oncle is unforgettable. --Tom Keogh

Amazon.co.uk Review
If you dig back into the dim and distant past, Disney as a company was slow to appreciate the potential of the DVD format. And while it very much got its act together in the end, the very early Disney DVDs were distinctly underwhelming. The company has made no such mistake with Blu-ray, embracing the format astoundingly well, as perfectly demonstrated by its release of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

As part of the firm’s Diamond Collection, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is crammed to the rafters with terrific and engaging extra features, which somehow find more things to say about a film that’s seven decades old. But it’s the attention that the main feature itself has been given that puts pretty much everyone else to shame.

You could be forgiven for thinking Disney might have been hamstrung by the age of the material here, but there’s little evidence of that with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The transfer here is stunningly good, with the film looking more as if it was made in the last few years rather than back in the 1930s. Consider the number of Blu-ray catalogue titles of just ten years ago that look quite shaky, and it’s all the more impressive an achievement. The audio, too, has been treated to a spruce up, and the whole disc feels like no detail was too much trouble. It’s a superb Blu-ray of a genuine classic film, and further proof as to why Disney is so highly regarded for its high definition discs. --Simon Brew

This three-disc set includes a digitally-restored copy of the movie on Blu-ray, a Blu-ray features disc (see the packshot above for details of features and extras), plus a digitally-restored copy of the movie on DVD.

Synopsis
Disney's first full-length animated masterpiece features all the elements of a classic fairy tale--a beautiful heroine, an evil queen, Prince Charming...and a septet of whistling dwarfs. In hiding from her jealous and wicked stepmother, the fair Snow White takes refuge with a band of kind-hearted, hard-working dwarves: Bashful, Sneezy, Sleepy, Happy, Grumpy, Dopey and Doc. Eventually the vain queen finds Snow White and tricks her into eating a poisoned apple. Luckily, a wandering prince comes to her rescue, but can he break the evil queen's spell?

Based on the Brothers Grimm fairy tale, SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS was initially thought a crazy idea for a feature film by those at Walt Disney. However, its lush production and charming characters proved otherwise. Standing the test of time since its release in 1937, the film has entranced audiences for decades, teaching them to never be vain and always whistle while they work.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.co.uk Review
A Disney "classic" that actually is a classic, Dumbo should be part of your movie collection whether or not you have children. The storytelling was never as lean as in Dumbo, the songs rarely as haunting (or just plain weird), the characters rarely so well defined. The film pits the "cold, cruel, heartless" world that can't accept abnormality against a plucky, and mute, hero. Jumbo Jr. (Dumbo is a mean-spirited nickname) is ostracised from the circus pack shortly after his delivery by the stork because of his big ears. His mother sticks up for him and is shackled. He's jeered by children (an insightful scene has one boy poking fun at Dumbo's ears, even though the youngster's ears are also ungainly), used by the circus folk, and demoted to appearing with the clowns. Only the decent Timothy Q. Mouse looks out for the little guy. Concerns about the un-PC "Jim Crow" crows, who mock Dumbo with the wonderful "When I See an Elephant Fly", should be moderated by remembering that the crows are the only social group in the film who act kindly to the little outcast. If you don't mist up during the "Baby Mine" scene, you may be legally pronounced dead. --Keith Simanton

DVD Description
Mrs. Jumbo, a veteran circus elephant, receives a baby from the stork. He soon becomes the laughing stock of the herd because of his jumbo-sized ears and is cruelly nicknamed "Dumbo". When Mrs. Jumbo loses her temper, she is locked up as a mad elephant and Dumbo finds himself all alone, except for a self-appointed mentor-protector, Timothy Q. Mouse. After Dumbo and Timothy meet a group of crows, they convince Dumbo that he might be able to fly with a boost of confidence. With his "magic feather," Dumbo takes flight. When he loses his feather, Dumbo realises that he could fly by himself the entire time. After performing for the circus, Dumbo is a media sensation with Timothy as his manager and his mother by his side.

Original Walt Disney Television Introduction

Synopsis
Deceptively simple, beautiful, moving, and hilarious, DUMBO is often overlooked when considering Disney's greatest films because perhaps of its lack of extravagance, its brief running time, and its simple story. Baby elephant Jumbo Jr. is delivered by the stork to his elephant mother with much fanfare but soon receives a cold shoulder from the snobby female pachyderms and the rest of the circus due to his oversize ears. When his mother goes on a rampage in order to protect him from some snickering rubes, she winds up locked away. Dumbo is left without a friend in the world until the street-smart Timothy Mouse decides to become his manager and a telephone line full of delightful jive-talking crows convince him he can fly. Highlights include Dumbo accidentally getting drunk and experiencing the surreal musical sequence Pink Elephants on Parade and a soundtrack packed with such priceless songs as the Oscar-winning 'Baby Mine' and the crow's soulful number, 'When I see an Elephant Fly'. There's nary an imperfect moment to be found in this raucous, tender, sublime film, which has been delighting audiences for generations.

His work is imbued with the bleak cynicism associated with shomin-geki (working-class drama), yet the struggle for a life better than the one dealt by fate, is celebrated with dignified restraint. This release features three beautiful melodramas all of which have become regarded as masterpieces of world cinema.

Classic Action Films

Knowing what really makes the grade can be tricky, so here are some all time favourite action features that won't disappoint.

Terminator 2: Judgement Day - Arnold Schwarzenegger in his entire gun-blazing glory

If you're a fan of Arnie and the first 'Terminator' movie, the second time around will be sure to not disappoint. Ten years after the Terminator last failed to destroy Sarah Connor and her son, John, a new Terminator is back under instruction from Skynet, with more guns, action, determination and science fiction than ever before.

Speed - Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves in high-adrenaline, edge-of-your-seat action

With a ticking time bomb set to blow on a bus full of people that can't drop below a certain speed (ha...there it is...the movie title!), who is going to save the day but our favourite action heroes Annie Porter (Sandra Bullock) and Officer Jack Traven (Keanu Reeves).

Die Hard - Early Bruce Willis in "40 stories of sheer adventure"

Released in 1988, this epic tale of an NYC cop trying to stop terrorists killing his wife (and everyone else in the LA office high rise) makes this movie an action classic. With the calculating mind of John McClane (Bruce Willis) working overtime to try and save his wife and the police playing it by the book, this really gets the mind thinking, "what will happen next?"

Commando - Of course Arnold Schwarzenegger made it to the list twice!

Ex-army Colonel John Matrix (Arnold Schwarzenegger) has retired to live a life of simplicity in the Californian wilderness with daughter Jenny. When she is taken by an old army subordinate, a raft of dramatic events occur, all of which involves greed and a power struggle. Matrix takes back control, Commando style.

First Blood - Rambo makes his first appearance

After stumbling into a less-than-welcoming town, former Green Beret John Rambo (Sylvester Stallone) is tortured within an inch of his life by Sherriff Will Teasle and ultimately loses his marbles in the process. Once Rambo has snapped and killed a second-in-command, he arms himself with enough ammunition for a small army and heads for the hills. Aside from the 'Rocky' movies, this is one of the most popular action flicks that Stallone has starred in.

Amazon.co.uk Review
Disney's 1967 animated feature The Jungle Book seems even more entertaining now than it did upon first release, with a hall-of-fame vocal performance by Phil Harris as Baloo, the genial bear friend of feral child Mowgli. Loosely based on Rudyard Kipling's original, the film goes its own way as Disney animation will, but the strong characters and smart casting (George Sanders as the villainous tiger, Shere Khan) make it one of the studio's stronger feature-length cartoons. Songs include "The Bare Necessities" and "Trust in Me". --Tom Keogh

Amazon.co.uk Review
One of the very best animated films that the Walt Disney Studio has ever released (and the last to be produced by Walt Disney himself), and as downright brilliant as it was on its debut in 1967, The Jungle Book makes a very welcome return to DVD in this excellent 40th anniversary double-disc set.

Based loosely on the Rudyard Kipling’s book of the same name, the film tells the story of man-cub Mowgli, and the friends he makes in the jungle. And it’s these friends who ignite the film, with some of the most memorable characters and songs that Disney has ever put on the screen. Kings of The Jungle Book are the likes of Baloo the Bear, King Louie the villainous Shere Khan the Tiger, while supporting characters such as Colonel Hathi are just as memorable. It’s astonishing that it packs so much and so many into its relatively short running time.

It’s an amazing achievement too that The Jungle Book bristles with such energy and fun, and that it’s just as likely to enthral the current generation of youngsters as well as those of us who saw it first time round. And when those songs start playing--from Bare Necessities through to I Wanna Be Like You--it'll take some effort to not start tapping your feet. A brilliant, brilliant film, and as vintage as the Disney back catalogue gets. --Simon Brew

Synopsis
The 19th animated feature produced by Disney studios and the last film supervised by Walt Disney himself. This endearing feature is based on Rudyard Kipling's children's story about a boy named Mowgli raised by wolves in the wilderness of India. During his delightful and scary adventures with a series of wild creatures, Mowgli learns he must leave the jungle and be what nature intended him to be -- a man. Delightful jazz-inspired songs make this a Disney classic.
